Carly Newhouse

Carly is a Project Analyst in Mintz Levin’s New York office. She graduated, magna cum laude, from Barnard College in February of 2010 with a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology and English. She was placed on Dean’s list each semester and received two merit-based internship grants, the first for her work at publishing house Farrar, Straus, & Giroux in 2008 and the second for time spent at the Anti-Defamation League in summer 2009.

Carly combined both of her majors into a single thesis, writing on the ways in which iconic images, in this case those of Marilyn Monroe, can be reconstituted to support and speak for varying political and cultural ideologies. She chose to study Marilyn Monroe by looking at two biographies written on the star, one in 1973 by famed intellectual Norman Mailer and the other in 1988 by feminist leader Gloria Steinem. Carly’s analysis of these two texts serves to suggest that both photographic images and texts are objects whose meanings constantly shift based on the time period, speaker, and audience in which they are viewed.

Carly had internships outside of college each semester. Some of her work includes TIME, literary agency Kneerim & Williams P.C., and Pleasure Boat Studios: A Literary Press. Her public service work is not limited to, but includes the New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG), the Aleh Center for the Mentally Diasbled, and the Northern Jersey Political Action Committee (NORPAC).

Carly was born and raised in New York City. She is fluent in Hebrew and has travelled to Israel more times than she can count. Carly is a licensed notary and plans on attending the Cardozo School of Law in fall 2012.  In her free time, she enjoys reading and playing with her pets.
