Shantanu Basu Joins Mintz Levin's Silicon Valley Office

Firm's Intellectual Property Practice Continues to Expand

Palo Alto, CA – Continuing the expansion of the firm's West Coast Intellectual Property practice, Shantanu Basu, most recently of Morrison & Foerster LLP, has joined Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo, P.C. in the firm's Palo Alto office. 

Dr. Basu represents companies in biotechnology, pharmaceutical, biochip and related industries in patent prosecution, litigation and arbitration matters dealing with both U.S. and international patent laws and procedures.  Dr. Basu holds a Ph.D. in molecular biology and brings several years of scientific research experience, in addition to his legal experience, in such areas as virology, AIDS, protein chemistry, gene therapy and molecular biology.

As a lawyer, Dr. Basu has dealt with an array of issues including patent interference, reexamination and reissue proceedings.  He has experience in intellectual property licensing, IP due diligence in financial transactions, validity analysis and strategic counseling.

Dr. Basu holds a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry and a Master of Science degree in biochemistry from the University of Calcutta, India.  He also earned a Master of Science degree and a Ph.D. in molecular biology from Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York and his J.D. from Fordham University Law School.  Prior to obtaining his J.D., Dr. Basu investigated the replication of the HIV and Murine Leukemia viruses as a post-doctoral fellow at the University of California Medical Center in San Francisco.  Dr. Basu is admitted to the State courts in California, New York and New Jersey and he is registered to practice before the U.S. District Courts for Northern California and New Jersey as well as the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
