Three of the Largest Venture Capital Deals in New England Handled by Mintz Levin Attorneys

Over $100 Million Raised in Third Quarter 2004

Boston, MA - Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo, P.C. today announced that it served as counsel to three of the companies that completed financings ranked among the top ten largest venture capital deals in the New England region, according to a third quarter 2004 report compiled jointly by PricewaterhouseCoopers, Thomson Venture Economics, National Venture Capital Association and Money Tree Survey.  Mintz Levin attorneys represented Massachusetts-based Coley Pharmaceutical Group, Ember Corporation and Archemix Corporation in financings totaling over $100 million.

Mintz Levin attorneys Chris Denn, Bill Whelan, Dan Follansbee and Jim Chicoski, who practice in the firm's Boston office, served as counsel to Coley Pharmaceutical Group of Wellesley Hills, MA, an international biopharmaceutical company that develops DNA-based immune stimulators, in raising $25.2 million in private funding from its investors.  The funds will be applied to the continued development of ProMune? and Actilon?, two of Coley?s lead drug candidates.

Bill Whelan, Joe Vittiglio and Kostantinos Sofronas, attorneys in the firm's Boston office, represented Ember Corporation of Boston, MA, a developer of wireless semiconductor solutions, in closing an additional $25 million in funding during the third quarter, bringing the total capital raised by Ember to $53 million.

Jeff Wiesen and Scott Samuels, attorneys in the firm's Boston office, represented Archemix Corporation of Cambridge, MA, a biopharmaceutical developer of aptamer therapeutics for the prevention and treatment of acute and chronic human diseases, in its $50 million financing for the continued clinical development of its portfolio of aptamer therapeutics. Since its inception in 2001, the total amount raised by the Archemix is more than $100 million.
