Helen Gerostathos Guyton is Of Counsel in the Litigation section of the firm’s Washington office.  Helen has a diverse litigation practice that focuses on complex civil and criminal litigation matters, with a particular emphasis on class actions, regulatory litigation, fraud and abuse investigations, and insurance coverage defense. 

In addition to her litigation experience, Helen devotes a considerable amount of her practice to the firm’s pro bono program.  Helen serves as Chief Outside Counsel for the National Network to End Domestic Violence, a leading voice for domestic violence victims and their advocates.  She has assisted numerous victims of sexual assault, stalking and domestic violence in obtaining protective orders and ensuring their privacy rights are protected.  Helen has drafted amicus briefs to the United States Supreme Court and various state supreme courts on behalf of domestic violence and sexual assault victims.

Helen also spearheaded the legislative effort in Massachusetts for the passage of “An Act Relative to Harassment Prevention Orders” (G.L. c. 258E), a law which allows a victim of stalking, sexual assault, and/or harassment to obtain a criminally enforceable restraining order against her or his perpetrator.

Helen is an active member of the Firm’s Pro Bono Committee and manages the D.C. Office’s pro bono program.  She is also a member of the Diversity Committee and frequently mentors and trains junior associates.

Representative Matters

  • Helen obtained summary judgment in negligence and private nuisance action on behalf of asset manager.  After tenant appealed decision, Helen successfully argued that trial court properly dismissed all counts and appellate court affirmed.  See Jacobson v. Beacon Capital Partners, LLC, Case No. 11-CV-1142, D.C. Court of Appeals, Nov. 2, 2012.
  • Helen assisted in defeating certification of national class of cable subscribers renting set-top cable television boxes.  See In re Cox Communications, Inc. Set Top Box Antitrust Litigation, 2011 WL 6826813 (W.D. Okl. Dec. 28, 2011) (counsel for Cox).
  • As first chair, Helen obtained not guilty verdict for physician accused of second degree assault and fourth degree sexual offense.
  • Following a trial in the Immigration Court, Helen obtained an award of asylum for her pro bono client, a refugee from Rwanda.
  • Helen has co-authored a number of amicus briefs on behalf of the National Network to End Domestic Violence, including:
