Enacted into law on December 8, 2003, the Medicare Prescription Drug Improvement and Modernization Act (the "Act") radically overhauled many key features of Medicare and added a new outpatient prescription drug benefit (Medicare Part D). The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently published a comprehensive final rule implementing many of the Act's important features. This client advisory describes the particulars of the standard Medicare Part D benefit and explains how the Act affects employer-sponsored group health plans.
