The recruitment of foreign workers for long term care and assisted living facilities is not a foreign concept. U.S. facilities have been recruiting foreign nationals pursuant to various types of visa classifications since the early 1950s. Given the current and projected shortage of nurses, more and more facilities are turning to the recruitment of foreign nationals to fill valuable nursing positions.
This issue discusses the nursing shortage -- predicted by Health Resources and Service Administration, Bureau of Health Professions, National Center for Health Workforce Analysis -- which was already evident in 2000, but predicted to be serious by 2007. Foreign workers are offered as a solution to the impending crisis, and immigration options are set forth.
