The Open Source movement has gained significant momentum, and the the bioinformatics field has seen its share of Open Source software. This advisory provides an introduction to Open Source, addresses some of the benefits and drawbacks of Open Source licenses, from both a legal and business perspective, describes some Open Source software used in the bioinformatics industry, and provides some perspectives on factors to consider in deciding whether to use Open Source licenses.
