On Tuesday, December 7, 2010 William Kannel and Adrienne Walker presented a webinar entitled “When the City Goes Broke: A Guide to Municipal Bankruptcy and Its Alternatives.” Municipalities are becoming increasingly stressed by post-retirement obligations to their employees, eroding tax revenues, and declining local aid. Many are predicting a surge in municipalities, including assessment districts, filing for protection under Chapter 9 of the Bankruptcy Code or seeking alternative means to restructure their obligations. William and Adrienne addressed issues including who can file a Chapter 9 petition, whether creditors can force a filing, the key differences between Chapter 9 and Chapter 11, and more.
