Last week U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced $130 million in funding for five new program areas under the Advanced Research Projects Agency – Energy (ARPA-E), which funds early-stage energy inventions. The new program areas are smart-grid control systems, advanced power electronics for solar panels, breakthrough biofuel technologies, thermal storage applications, and alternatives to rare earth materials. Concept papers are due by May 19, 2011. The five new program areas are detailed in this alert.
